How to Check if the Infrared (IR) Dongle is Working Properly

What is the IR dongle ?

The infrared (IR) module is a small box or dongle that sends remote signals to a screen or projector, to change optotypes via the SiVIEW app. It works just like a regular remote control.

Step 1 – Basic Checks

  • Make sure the IR dongle hasn’t fallen and is properly pointed toward the screen or mirror.

  • Check that there is no dirt or obstruction in front of the screen’s or projector’s IR sensor.

👉 Once these checks are done, if the screen still doesn’t respond, move on to the next step.

Step 2 – Test the IR dongle

  1. Point the IR dongle at the screen or projector

  2. Send a command (via SiVIEW)

  3. Observe if the screen reacts (optotypes change)

➡️ If the screen does not respond:

  • Test the screen/projector’s remote control:

    • If the remote works but the IR dongle doesn’t, the module may be faulty.

Step 3 – Check with a Smartphone

  • Open your phone’s camera app

  • Point the camera at the IR area of the module (the smooth surface)

  • Send a command via SiVIEW
👉 If you see a blinking light on your phone’s screen, the IR module is working.

What if I don’t see anything ?

That doesn’t necessarily mean the module is faulty. Some smartphones (especially recent iPhones or high-end Android devices) filter infrared light, particularly on the rear camera. Try the following:

  • Use the front-facing camera, which usually has less filtering

  • Try with a different smartphone

Still not working ?

If, after all these steps, you see no blinking light and the screen doesn’t respond:
➡️ Please contact our support team. Your IR module is likely defective.
